Little Witch Lab / FATHOM

Flowers / Leaves / Fruits. Flowers, leaves, and fruits are the forms that are created when plants are nurtured by the blessings of the earth and sunlight. Little Witch Lab is a gallery that exhibits the work of Mutsumi Fujimoto, an accessory artist who uses a unique technique to contain that momentary beauty and sublimate it into a permanent beauty that does not change over time, like a jewel worn by a human being. It will be the atelier of Mutsumi Fujimoto and a gallery to exhibit her works. She chose Tokaichi in Naka-ku, Hiroshima City. The building is located where the old Ota River, which flows through the city and leads to Hiroshima Bay, meets the long-established Kusayo Inou Shrine. The location is both dignified and quiet, and the time passes slowly, making it a wonderful place in the city.

Basement Extension to a Former Artist Studio / VATRAA

The client, a family of three, started the project as a property developer. Halfway through the design, they loved it so much that they decided to make it their own house. While not forgetting the investment factor (maximising the floor space was a must), we dove deep into understanding their personalities. Exploring their interest in spirituality and meditation, we agreed that the house should become their private sanctuary – protective, calm and serene. As a result, the house became an atmospheric journey, from the secluded basement to the vibrant first floor, orchestrated around dichotomies as dark-light, calm-vibrant, warm-cold or intimate-exposed.

This is a project to renovate a room in an apartment building with balconies on the north and south sides. In this renovation project, which could not exceed a predetermined size, we attempted to create a space with a false sense of space that would make people perceive an expanse greater than the actual space.

The Diwan is a year-round pavilion and event space for the University of Alberta Botanic Gardens and the final piece to complete the 4.8-hectare Aga Khan Garden, Alberta. The site of the pavilion was designated in the original concept plan for the Garden, inaugurated in 2018.  In addition to providing multi-use functionality, the pavilion was to resonate with its rich surroundings and extend the themes of the Garden, a contemporary interpretation of Islamic landscape architecture in a northern climate and context.  The pavilion was designed to complement the spirit of the Garden’s design, heritage, and experience. The term diwan has varied historical definitions, and here implies a space for meeting, cultural exchange, and celebration.

Yakimono Restaurant / Russell & George

Good restaurants are places that take you somewhere else. Places where you go on a journey to somewhere you haven’t been; places where you suspend disbelief. This is really the fundamental driver of any good restaurant design, to create a series of spaces that support the experience of a great restaurant operator. They are also places that speak about our culture and dining together. Melbourne is one of the world’s great cosmopolitan dining cities. Its restaurants are diverse and varied. Yakimono is one of the latest venues that represent that great dining culture.

House in Tondabayashi / Masaaki Mitani

October 3, 2022 Bianca Valentina Roșescu 0

Relationships are created by the single-story garden’s floor, roof, walls, and openings. This house is the architect’s residence. The site is in a quiet residential area on a gentle slope and is bordered on the north by a lush green row of Japanese white oak and a large camphor tree. The district has a setback distance from the site boundary, allowing for more space between neighboring buildings. Therefore, we thought it would be possible to create a landscape that would harmonize with the surrounding environment by creating an encircling path of continuous greenery from the north side down along the open garden to the courtyard, thereby bringing a lush green environment into the house.
