Zikawei Library: Basilica in the library – At the beginning of 2023, the Zikawei Library, designed by Wutopia Lab for four years, was officially opened. Coming to be the most sensational cultural landmark in Shanghai, it was also the first time that the project was known to the whole city before the official announcement from the studio. Now, this article is more like a summary instead of its unveiling. Before it became the Zikawei Library, the building was designed as a bookstore by David Chipperfield Architects. Unfortunately, just after the facade and the structure of the building were completed, the building was left vacant. After two investments of the bookstore had bowed out, this building was eventually designated to be the public library in Zikawei District and named the Zikawei Library.
The Afshar family residential complex is located in the dense urban context of Tehran. Before the client offered us the project, the structure was ordered and almost ready to be fixed. We made some voids and revised the project in terms of the patio’s meaning. As parents, the clients wanted the complex to include three houses, One larger house for themselves and two houses for their children. On the first three floors, two duplex units are designed, and the two last levels are allocated to the parents, so a common neighborhood space was essential; meanwhile, the southern alley was not wide and unable to offer a spectacular view, which led to the formation of the most important architectural decision of the project: creating introverted houses neighboring each other with a strong connection with the northern yard.

We Coffee’s third store have just been opened next to Ibirapuera Park, in the Vila Nova Conceição neighborhood in São Paulo. It has the brand’s characteristics but it was set up in a completely different way from the others, where the standard white color of the other stores was rethought from scratch and positioned in a way that embraces the local architecture, a result of the union of two constructions.
The “Labt-20” modules are part of a serial execution and workshop production system that can be modified and adapted to different climates and user needs by simply altering their size and some particular characteristics, adding comfort and services. They try to be compact buildings, with a little covered surface, versatile and surpassing the very trendy idea of “Glamping” by proposing much more than a simple shelter, from a small habitat to implant in extreme landscapes, such as the slope of a mountain, a forest, the edge of a lake or a river, etc., to a house or a tourist complex that feeds on these pieces of architecture and is completed with the necessary infrastructure, achieving balanced interactions with nature, flora, and fauna, and understanding architecture, its inhabitants and everything around them as part of a continuous and joint organism.
The building is composed of a wing that completes the block’s perimeter wall on Viale Umbria and an orthogonal wing that extends in depth towards the center of the block, with the last of the three stairwells extending the height of the building’s eleven above-ground floors: from the morpho-typological standpoint, the building is, therefore, a hybrid between a block’s perimeter wall type, a slab type, and a tower type. From the large double-height lobby on the street, there is access to a portico that provides direct access to all the stairwells and underground parking areas, accessible via independent staircases.
