Thoma House / Candalepas Associates

April 9, 2019 Andreas Luco 0

From the busy, unassuming, suburban street of Military Road the house reveals very little of itself. It presents as a protector of its inhabitants yet is gentle in its embrace, offering to the street delicate glimpses of its subtlety through carefully crafted openings. This house is private but it is welcoming. An entry sequence begins an unveiling of secrets. The path along one side widens to a double-height entry and a layered composition of windows—eyes looking out with purpose.

The client’s family has been living in the beautiful site surrounded by nature for generations for over 300 years. The client couple lived in the “main house” built two generations ago and an “annex” built by them, going back and forth between those two separate buildings. They wanted to have a new style of living so that they could have a space to invite their daughter’s family and grandchildren. I planned this extension and restoration to make it feasible for its rich heritage to pass on to the next generation while leaving their favorite “annex”.

Twin Peaks Residence / Feldman Architecture

April 8, 2019 Andreas Luco 0

Overlooking the natural elegance of the Mount Sutro Open Reserve, the Twin Peaks Residence is a direct reflection of the occupants who live there, two highly active 30-somethings with a passion for yoga and a thirst for travel. Inspired by the sloping hill and bountiful garden, both client and architect worked in tandem to elevate the property into a modern transformation by opening up the original compartmentalized main floor, with the goal of visually and physically connecting it to the spacious rear yard.

Conceptual framework. The brief was for the creation of an Asian type compound, a series of structures within a walled garden providing seclusion and refuge with in the suburban setting, and flexibility for future use. The site strategy allows the historic weather board cottage to be retained, creating a sequence of garden courtyards and verandahs linking the old and new buildings. A narrative of movement is created from public to private zones modulated by the verandah, the repetition of structure and framed garden views.

Obidos House / FCC Arquitectura

The project’s starting point was a group of existing buildings, whose interiors were in an advanced state of degradation, in some cases even in ruins. These buildings were united so as to create a new dwelling. The project aimed to change the buildings’ exterior appearance as much as possible, while conserving and recovering the exterior walls. The interiors were redesigned according to the requirements of contemporary dwellings. The intention was to regenerate without being misrepresented, requalifying spaces that were “dead”, and integrating them with new spaces.

In 1990 the famed golfer and golf course architect, Gary Player, designed a golf course that was built on the grounds of the original ‘chateau ferme’. This chateau, which was constructed between 1745 and 1826, and golf course rests in the bucolic Belgian countryside and is regarded as one of the most beautiful in Belgium with its commanding views and natural setting. The chateau had been only partially occupied for services with more than half left vacant and unused for decades. Under new ownership, the transformation of the facility was completed in 2018 that breathes new life into the building through a reorganization of the entire structure, which includes the incorporation of a new 35-room hotel.

The proposal hosts a group of dwelling activities that are developed around a garden. The house is located inside the Yucatán Country Club, north from Mérida and distant from the high-density urban flow. The irregular geometry of the plot defined the organization of the domestic program, considering the flows of
natural ventilation and solar path as parameters to take advantage of passive energies throughout the day.

The house is located on a slope of rock and wild vegetation with steep slope from which you can enjoy beautiful views of the bay of the town. The access to the plot is on the lower level and from there, a path that climbs slowly in a zigzag or an elevator. Upon crossing the door we find the first view of the bay framed by the large windows of the living room. These breathtaking views are the background of all interior spaces. On the ground floor there is one of the rooms, the living room, the kitchen. On the upper floor there are two rooms.

Meadows Nursery / MailenDesign

April 5, 2019 Andreas Luco 0

This re-modelling of a greenfield agricultural site creates nursery provision for 70 children aged 6 months to 5 years in stunning Northumberland farmland. Given its sensitive context it was necessary for the building to merge into the landscape and reflect the rural aesthetic of the surrounding agricultural vernacular.
