The intervention project of the existing auditorium and its expansion as a cultural center was requested by the Culture Ministry of the State of Jalisco, to meet the goals of the program known as Cardinal Culture. This program seeks to decentralize culture and spread it in different regions of the state through the construction of different cultural complexes. Our project is located on the shore of Lake Chapala, the largest lake in Mexico.

This is a large and small building located at the foot of the Andes mountain range. In fact, it is a collection of twelve different buildings separated by visible seismic joints. To say that this collection of concrete blocks is a house would be too simple.

Immediate to the largest green space in the Colegiales neighborhood, the land is located in an atypical block of low density. It is a neighborhood in the midst of transformation, where today PHs and single-family homes predominate, with taller buildings as isolated events. The land, with a front of 8.66m and a depth of 34m, has particular building conditions for this sector of the city, with a series of limitations that result in a volume of vacant air that can be used for the project.

Diego Rivera began the great dream of achieving the City of Arts in the South of Mexico City in a landscape of volcanic stone with native vegetation that emerges from it. In the 1940s, he began to imagine how to carry out his project in this place, inviting Juan O’Gorman and his daughter Ruth Rivera to collaborate. They envisioned buildings constructed with the same stone as the site and carried out the first exercises of murals on the ceilings with the colored stones that they later created at Ciudad Universitaria.
