The Tree House was developed in response to the mother of a busy family who in finding herself reliant on a wheelchair was also finding herself increasingly confined to a single room.
PHOOEY Architects transformed an existing double storey Victorian-era heritage-listed attached terrace house in Melbourne into a bespoke & sustainable home for a young family.
The problem in the understanding of inhabitation is that it is perceived as purely utilitarian. Perceiving it as such, is to deny it of all the structural aspects it has on one’s perception and thus on one’s way of thinking.
Carrying out the project of a house for a group of Scouts required some previous research of the ways of living, educating, playing and organization these kind of associations have. From the beginning, the project was focused on the search of an inclusive space that would allow both group work and respect for the environment and their surroundings.
When looking for architectural pre-existences in Monteporreiro, we find out that the place did not have any previous “partial plans”.
There were several premises, when facing the design of the building. It had to be located in the limit of an unconsolidated Partial Plan, to become an activating milestone in the area. It had to be executed in a short period of time and with a reduced budget.

Thinking of a living space it is always complex if it is understood as a link between the implicit customs- meaning culture-, socio-physical needs that each individual brings with himself, and environment-context where the work is projected. The space and limits incorporated as a shelter bring the challenge of migrating to another condition, place, from a chronotopic conception.
