Understanding the Three Layers of Light
Lighting is the single most transformative element in interior design. A beautifully furnished room with poor lighting will always disappoint; an ordinary room with exceptional lighting can feel extraordinary. Accent lighting — the use of directed, focused light sources to highlight specific architectural features, artwork, or materials — is the most powerful tool in the interior designer’s lighting arsenal. Great interior lighting always combines three distinct layers working in harmony.
Ambient Lighting provides the base level of illumination — the room’s overall brightness. This is typically delivered by ceiling-mounted fixtures, recessed downlights, or indirect cove lighting. Ambient light should always be controllable with dimmers, as its required level varies dramatically between daytime function and evening relaxation.
Task Lighting targets specific activity areas — the kitchen counter, reading chair, bathroom mirror, or desk surface. Task lighting needs to be bright and shadow-free, positioned to avoid glare in the user’s direct line of sight.
Accent Lighting is the dramatic layer — the layer that creates mood, highlights beauty, and transforms architecture. It operates at 3–5 times the brightness of ambient light, creating contrast that draws the eye and defines the character of the space.

Accent Lighting Techniques
Wall Washing
A row of ceiling-mounted adjustable spots aimed at a wall at approximately 30° from vertical creates an even wash of light across the entire surface. This technique works brilliantly on textured surfaces — exposed brick, rough plaster, stone, or paneling — where the raking light creates dramatic shadow play in the surface relief. Wall washing is also the preferred technique for highlighting a large artwork or a gallery wall, providing even illumination without hot spots or dark patches.
Picture Lighting
Artwork should be lit at 30° from the horizontal to minimize glare while maximizing even illumination across the canvas surface. Adjustable ceiling spots or dedicated picture lights mounted on the frame both work well. The light source should be as close in color temperature to daylight (3000–3500K) as possible to render colors accurately without introducing a warm cast that distorts the artist’s palette.

Grazing
Where wall washing casts even light, grazing uses a light source positioned very close to (50–150mm from) a textured surface to dramatically exaggerate surface relief. A grazing light on a rough stone wall transforms it into a landscape of peaks and shadows — extraordinarily dramatic for feature walls and architectural texture. The technique is particularly effective on raw concrete, raked plaster, textured brick, and rough timber cladding.
Cove and Coffer Lighting
Indirect lighting concealed within ceiling coves, coffers, or behind pelmet boards creates a halo of light that appears to float the ceiling, making rooms feel larger and more dramatic. LED strip lighting in warm white (2700–3000K) is the standard contemporary solution. A cove detail drawing should show the LED strip position, the angle of the cove face (typically 45°), the depth of the shadow gap, and the distance from the strip to the ceiling surface to ensure even light spread without visible hot spots.

Highlighting Objects and Sculpture
Three-dimensional objects — sculptures, vases, floral arrangements — benefit from a three-point lighting approach: a key light for primary illumination, a fill light to soften shadows, and a backlight or rim light to create separation from the background. This technique, borrowed from film and photography, gives objects a rounded, three-dimensional quality under artificial light.
Color Temperature: The Most Misunderstood Variable
Color temperature, measured in Kelvin (K), dramatically affects the mood and perceived warmth of a space. Understanding the spectrum is essential for creating coherent lighting schemes:
- 2700K: Very warm, intimate, candle-like — ideal for bedrooms, dining rooms, and hospitality
- 3000K: Warm white — the standard for residential living spaces and retail environments
- 3500K: Neutral white — ideal for kitchen task areas and bathroom vanity lighting
- 4000K: Cool white — commercial offices, garages, utility spaces
- 5000–6500K: Daylight — medical examination, specialist retail, photography studios
Accent lighting should always be warmer than ambient lighting to create the contrast that makes highlighted elements glow. A 2700K accent light against 3000K ambient creates a warm, inviting effect; the same accent light in a 4000K ambient environment would look harsh and mismatched.
CRI: Color Rendering Index Explained
The Color Rendering Index (CRI) measures how accurately a light source renders colors compared to natural daylight (CRI 100). It is one of the most important — and most frequently ignored — lighting specification parameters. For interior design lighting, always specify a minimum CRI of 90. Below 80, colors appear muddy and materials lose their character. At CRI 95+, timber, stone, fabric, and artwork all render with a richness and depth that transforms the quality of the interior.
LED technology has advanced to the point where high-CRI (90+) sources are available at all price points. There is no longer any justification for specifying low-CRI LEDs in a designed interior. The premium for high-CRI LEDs over standard LEDs is typically less than 20% and the visual difference is dramatic.

Lighting Control Systems
A sophisticated lighting scheme without sophisticated control is like a grand piano without a musician — the potential is there, but it cannot be realized. Modern lighting control systems allow: individual dimming of every circuit, scene setting (pre-programmed combinations of dimmer levels), time-based schedules (morning, daytime, evening, night modes), sensor-based control (occupancy, daylight linking), and integration with smart home systems (voice control, app control, automated scheduling).
For residential projects, the minimum lighting control specification should include dimming on all circuits in living areas, bedrooms, and dining rooms. For commercial and hospitality projects, a full DALI or DMX control system with scene setting and automated scheduling is standard.

Outdoor and Facade Lighting as Architecture
Accent lighting extends beyond the interior. Facade lighting — illuminating the exterior of a building at night — transforms architecture into a twenty-four hour proposition. The most effective facade lighting schemes use the building’s own architectural language as the basis for the lighting design: uplighting to emphasize vertical elements, wall washing to reveal facade texture, and feature lighting to highlight key architectural moments.
Garden and landscape lighting brings the same principles to the external environment: uplighting trees and sculpture, grazing textured hard landscaping, and path lighting that creates a journey through the garden at night. The most important principle in outdoor lighting design is restraint — darkness is part of the design, and over-lighting destroys the drama that selective lighting creates.
