Dongtai Library Complex Renovation / ORIA

November 10, 2021 Yu Xin Li 0

Multi-purpose has become a “hit-word” in today’s urban planning and construction, so has does the traditional Library. The name “Dongtai” has been used in Chinese history for over 800 years, the city adjacent to the Yellow Sea owns a long history, a deep cultural heritage, and a rising economy, as well as a strong will to build a livable environment that blends cultural and natural aspects together.

Roof III / Atelier Lai

November 9, 2021 Yu Xin Li 0

The roof is the connection between the building and the sky, an important shelter of the space, but also the core element of the building. The formal logic of the roof is influenced by two natural elements, gravity, and rain. Gravity is known as a permanent law of all things, however, rain is known as a natural thing that changes all the time. The resistance to gravity and the dredging of the rain determine the evolution of the roof. With the development of modern materials and mechanics, natural elements are no longer dominant in the form of roofs. The architecture shows an incomparably powerful human result, becoming more and more like a machine. The geometric purity of the form and the sense of the manual operation of the form (cutting, twisting …… ) demonstrate the ambition of modern people. Our philosophy of architecture is not like this. Architecture is not to drive away from nature, but to accept each other in the unity of man and nature: to guide the wildness of nature and to take good care of the vitality of nature.

Fengxi Primary School / MINAX Architects

November 6, 2021 Yu Xin Li 0

There is an impassable boundary between physical buildings and free space in a high-density city. Under the principle of efficiency first, the using function often takes precedence over spatial interest and the two seem not to achieve symbiosis. The same goes for school buildings, where economic use of land is strictly regulated, resulting in the similarity of buildings. After the fundamental teaching units and auxiliary functions are laid out, space for free activities can no longer form a complete and continuous expression. The site is divided by buildings, in which the scale of the public space is in sharp contrast to the concentrated playing field. Buildings have little uniqueness and a clear narrative; thus, it’s easy to fall into a set of paradigms. On this basis, the school urgently needs new strategies to form new expressions and visions.

Floating Islands of Sky / unarchitecte

November 3, 2021 Yu Xin Li 0

A special kind of structure, a pontoon bridge is a bridge which floats on the surface of water. Usually without large-scale underwater fixed components, most of them are for temporary use, mainly only for people to pass the water. The “floating pier”, a short-term installation designed by the couple Artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude on Lake Iseo, northern Italy in 2016, and Copenhagen Islands, a group of floating islands unveiled by architect Marshall Blecher and Studio Fokstrot, are the kind of completed pontoon bridge which combines design, function and art, rare to be seen. For us, the project of pontoon bridge was an interesting and challenging experience.

Minhang Riverfront Regeneration / SPARK Architects

November 2, 2021 Yu Xin Li 0

SPARK is delighted to announce the completion of the Minhang Riverfront Regeneration, the initial phase of SPARK’s much wider regeneration master plan of the public space of Shanghai’s Minhang district. The Minhang Riverfront is an ambitious story of urban regeneration. A mere 24 months ago it was a decrepit overgrown riverfront faced by low grade industrial warehouses with remnants of paths, industrial and disused utilities evidence of many years of change and neglect within the district.

Cabin Fairy Town / Parallect Design

October 29, 2021 Yu Xin Li 0

The Wooden Cabin Town is located on an island in the West Sea of Lushan, southwest of Jiujiang, Jiangxi. It was designed by Shanghai Parallect Architecture Studio. The predecessor of this water area is Xiu River, one of the five major rivers in Jiangxi. From the 1950s to the 1970s, the Xihai Barrage, known as Asia’s largest dam, was built here, and it formed a unique island in the lake area: like clusters of jungle floating above the water. And what we hope to present is a cluster of small wooden cabins floating above the jungle. The design includes a 24-meter-high observation tower, a multi-functional hall, and 19 prefabricated forest wooden cabins.

Wuxiang Mountain Qiu Hu Station / Mix Architecture

October 28, 2021 Yu Xin Li 0

Project Background. The project is in Wuxiang Mountain National Forest Park, Lishui District, Nanjing. The site has lush vegetation and beautiful scenery. One side is a mountain road and towering Metasequoia forest, and one side is a continuous mountain with dense bamboo forests. Due to the need for the development and renewal of the scenic area, it is planned to rebuild the original forestry office space and expand the functions of small-scale sales services, tourist consultation, and rest, making it a node station for park management and tourism. At the same time, the owner put forward requirements at the beginning of the design, hoping to use a courtyard as a prototype for operation.

Shiwan Zhusheli Exhibition Hall / ALL STUDIO

October 21, 2021 Yu Xin Li 0

In early 2019, ALL Studio was asked by HUATENG Co., Ltd. to design the exhibition hall of Shiwan town (an ancient town in the south of Wuzhen town) in an agricultural tourism park. In the planning design, the whole park retains the original natural feeling to the greatest extent. When people enter the site from the southwest corner of the park, they can see the plum forest and open grassland surrounded by bamboo fences in the park. Therefore, the design consideration of the exhibition hall building is also defined as a simple and rough temperament in nature from the beginning of the design.

Wind Pavilion / Tongji CAUP

October 20, 2021 Yu Xin Li 0

Project Introduction. Wind Pavilion, a bamboo-structured building located at the Longshanyuan in Anji City, serves tourist as a place for the rest, a small group as an accommodation for performances and a company as team building events. The design captures various landscapes characteristics from different aspects and uses bifurcated herringbone sheds as the spatial prototype. With fully explored bamboo’s potential structure of composite and information, we proposed originally a composite configuration of string-supported bamboo beam and side arches, which greatly reduces the amount of frames landing on the ground and realizes a curved surface with lithe and coherence. When the wind blows, the eventual space seems like a expensive canopy, evoking people’s initial feeling of being protecting from nature.
