MVRDV has completed the construction of a new wholesale market for fruit and vegetables in Tainan. Already dubbed by Taiwan’s United Daily News as “the most beautiful fruit and vegetable market in Taiwan”, the open-air market not only serves as an important hub for Tainan’s food supply chain, but also as a destination for meeting, socializing, and taking in views of the surrounding landscape from the building’s accessible roof, thus promoting tourism in the region. In the future, the roof can be further developed, with the possibility to grow fruit and vegetables on top of the structure.

Markets are places of exchange and meeting, a living testimony of culture. Tapachula is a city enriched by multiple views, which has been for centuries the most important land gateway to southern Mexico. Honoring a market is pointing out the importance of diversity, paying homage to the richness of everyday life.

To the east, Cabo de Gata serves as a backdrop to a rich landscape of boats that reminds us of the importance of the sea in the history of this land. Bangkok has 6.9 sq.m. of green public space per capita, 2.1 sq.m. below WHO standard. Most of the public parks are big and inaccessible due to the usual heavy traffic. Small pocket parks in the neighborhood will be more efficient for the city. Because of the past relaxed property taxes, the city holds many empty lands in the prime area. In 2020, the new taxes system encourages empty sites to be utilized commercially.

Chinese cities are experiencing unprecedented changes. After about 40 years rapid construction, what follows is the renewal and reconstruction of those prompt construction products. On the one hand, it is to make up for the quality defects caused by speed, and on the other hand, it is to face the dynamic adjustment of rapidly changed daily life. Rapid construction has met people’s basic functional needs, while the current adjustment bears meanings of both function and spirit. Public buildings take a substantial leading role. Relying on upgrading functions and forms, they reconstruct the critical nodes of the city and then bring new changes in a larger area and boost the quality of urban space. The relocation of the Liutan Agricultural Trade Market is a typical improvement experiment, a crucial-livelihood guarantee and a critical step to upgrade and adjust the space quality of the whole Liutan area.

XingHuaDongLi Zuolinyoushe Neighboring Courtyard Market is a new handy service facility for the old XingHuaDongLi Community located in Daxing District, Beijing. XingHuaDongLi Community was built in the 1980s as staff dormitories for the Beijing Chemical Fiber Factory. Like other residential areas constructed in the old days, many of the fundamental facilities aged day by day, making lives inconvenient for the neighbors in the communities. Based on the realistic conditions, the government of Daxing District took the opportunity of organic renewal of old communities and built this handy service facility from the view of serving and benefiting residents, strengthening weaknesses surrounding “Seven Properties” &” Five Senses ”. As for functional configurations, fruit and vegetable stores, laundry, drugstores, and restaurants were set up considering the high percentage of old people in the community. The facilities will be further improved and adjusted to the needs of neighboring residents, making it a new service center for an old community for real.
