The Paseo la Plaza has always captivated us locals for its enigmatic urban space, whose language empathizes with the collective imaginary of the heterogeneous nature of a city, especially one like Buenos Aires. As its name suggests, the prevailing emptiness, air, and vegetation literally illustrate the identity of the square.  Its alleys of cobblestones surround the theaters and each building has an identity that clearly emulates an old village. It is in this unique attribute so valued by the consumer that we analyze how we can integrate a new identity. An identity that should keep “Paseo la Plaza: The Square” as the main protagonist and “Manduca Market” as its necessarily integrated market.

Located in Brasília, between the Mané Garrincha National Stadium and the Nilson Nelson Gymnasium, on the Monumental Axis, the Mané Market project reuses the roof structure of an existing building. The market is a 6 year long temporary installation that will exist until the definitive installation of the future Sports Complex of Brasília at that location, whose construction is scheduled to begin in 2026. Until then, the objective is to take advantage of the existing infrastructure on the site and transform it into a market focused on gastronomy. The existing building was used during the 2007 Pan American Games. However, after that event, its space had been empty and unused for several years.

Regarding the preservation of the historic Hsin Fu market, the project aims to arrive at an understanding of its existence through the building design and its physical condition. The Hsin Fu market built in 1935 in the Wanhua district, the oldest district of Taipei, was designed based on “Form follows Function”. The horseshoe plan provides a loggia space as the ones found in the typology of public plazas where traditional markets used to be set up. From its original design, the HsinFu market is strikingly different from the traditional market, usually more permeable.

Village. Huangchong Village is a typical newly-built village,in the central region of the Pearl River Delta in Guangdong, China. A typical Lingnan village might be expected with the winding waterways. But as a matter of fact, two kilometers away from the upstream of the river, there is a traditional village that is more consistent with general imagination, covering stone bridges and ancestral halls in the late Qing Dynasty. And the place in the aerial photo is called Huangchong Village, where it exposes us to another practical context. It is a place difficult to describe in terms of preliminary understanding. Probably, it can be described as “wild” and “vague” place: It is a vital village filled with people and daily life. As a new village without the elements of traditional Lingnan villages, such as ancestral halls, iron sheets and tiles are major compositions, paired with the pragmatic atmosphere of small businesses. The ambiguity pervaded in the countryside of the Pearl River Delta is emerged from the street life and reacted upon the life here, which might lead to a loss of identity, though it is not a derogatory term.

“This city has many squares where there is a continuous market and I try to buy and sell. It has a square as big as twice the city of Salamanca, still surrounded by portals around it; where there are over sixty thousand souls buying and selling daily.” Hernán Cortés
