The Tree House was developed in response to the mother of a busy family who in finding herself reliant on a wheelchair was also finding herself increasingly confined to a single room.
Extension
Al Faya Lodge & Spa / ANARCHITECT
Set at the foot of Mount Alvaah, the Al Faya Lodge is nestled into the UAE’s prehistoric crimson desert landscape with close proximity to the UAE’s first petroleum pump. The Al Faya Lodge is a new addition to the Sharjah Collection – a group of distinctive boutique hotels and eco-retreats purposefully located in key locations throughout the Sharjah Emirate.
Barnato Hall Addition / 26’10 south Architects
This is achieved by making use of the existing stair towers, thus saving on the cost of vertical circulation whilst providing a much-needed second lift, additional warden’s flat and a raised roof terrace with magnificent vistas. Open walkways, views into existing trees, the sound of water from a nearby pond and carefully scaled courtyards provide an airy and bright counterpoint to the double loaded corridors and inward focusing character of the existing building.
La Peña Extension / MÉTODO
To properly contextualize a new work is of utmost importance, especially in interventions of existing projects, in cases of renovations and/or extensions. In a certain way, the natural context in which they are situated is already influenced, as an intrinsic part of the environment.
IN-SIGHT House / TOUCH Architect
An existing structure of a 3-storey townhouse had to be converted into a new home for a couple with a baby. There is no enough space for raising their child, together with some disadvantages from this type of building which has no green space area and natural sunlight, thus, the primary concept is to create more space which can allow for natural daylight, natural ventilation, and garden inside.
Fifty Fifty House / Architecture Architecture
This Murrumbeena extension is partly inspired by its original 1950s suburban home and partly by the modernist Case Study houses of the same decade. 1950s meets 1950s. About half of each. We’re talking fifty-fifty vision. That’s sharp. The original house is in good condition, has great charm, and is characteristic of the area: it’s fully detached, has a gabled slate roof, red brick walls, white fenestration and features stepped corbel details. Extending to the side and to the rear of the house, it was decided to retain as much of the original as possible and to honour its virtues with a contemporary interpretation.
Grant House / Austin Maynard Architects
Grant House is the alteration and addition to a dark and narrow single-storey terrace in North Fitzroy. The old part of the house has been respectfully maintained and updated and a new extension has been sleeved between original boundary walls. The new extension comprises kitchen/living/dining (and secret cellar), with parent’s retreat upstairs. Utilising the side laneway, the main entry is now in the centre of the house. A large and imposing galvanised steel door opens onto a light-flooded courtyard that separates the old house from the new addition.
Private Residence in Garðabær / Trípólí
This project entailed a complete renovation and expansion of a family home in Garðabær, a suburb of Reykjavík. The house was built in 1966 as a simple modernist unit with a flat roof and was extended a decade later. In 1994, a pitched roof was added on top of the original flat roof and the exterior walls were clad with Steni façade panels, leaving not much of the original architecture visible.
House in Loma Verde / Antonio García Bueno
The improvement in the conditions of comfort and energy efficiency, together with the need for spatial expansion and a general change in aesthetics, are at the base of this renovation and expansion project of an existing single-family house in Loma Verde (Albolote, Granada, Spain). The building is an isolated serial built house in an urbanization of the periphery of the city made in the 80s, with little compositional and architectural interest. The construction, moreover, was surrounded by a disordered garden that suffocated the very space of the house.
BioEngineering Center / Studio de Arquitectura y Ciudad
The project is an extension to the teaching infrastructure for the BioEngineering Department. Tecnológico de Monterrey’s Queretaro campus was initially organized in a more or less recognizable Cartesian mesh in its first built volumes, arbitrarily rotated 41 degrees from the north. Given the absence of order and intention in the infrastructure that was built in the last 20 years, Sasaki Design was invited to develop a new master plan. Sasaki’s attempt aims to give order and meaning to the campus, as the current set lacks meaning and identity. The plan defines two axes in a Roman way that originate in a new “heart” from which everything would start. The project is located at the east end of one of these two guiding axes. This implies a certain hierarchy without becoming the most important building. The new Laboratories seek at their site to generate three types of new public spaces with different qualities among them: two exterior piazzas, a portico and an interior garden.
