Drift, a timber-and-steel pedestrian bridge by designer Volkan Alkanoglu, has been completed and will be installed in Fort Worth, TX in Summer 2021. Fabricated off-site with a projected installation time of just a few hours, Drift is an innovative example of plug-and-play urbanism, an emerging sustainable and affordable design strategy that proposes building infrastructural elements off-site and dropping them into place.

The project tackles an interstitial space between municipalities, at the convergence of the Collserola and Marina ranges, besides the Rec Comtal and Besós natural spaces. The project’s area has historically been the rear side of both municipalities becoming a space degraded by illegal thrash dumping carried out over the years, generating the disengagement of the citizens with the area. The goal of the project is to consolidate and improve a pedestrian connection, currently inaccessible and insecure, between Vallbona and Can Sant Joan.

The new Riverstone Transit Center brings the administrative staff and bus services for City Link and Paratransit to a central hub location to provide riders with a safe, clean, and convenient experience. The project includes an Administrative Building, outdoor public restrooms, and a covered waiting shelter for riders. The site includes landscaped pathways to each of the eight bus loading areas, as well as 80 parking stalls and additional space for future growth.

Murdoch’s Connection Bridge / Matter

The new ‘Murdoch’s Connection’ footbridge in Hull, England opened to the public in March 2021. Following a public vote it is named after the city’s first female GP, Dr Mary Murdoch. The pedestrian bridge was designed by Arup and Matter Architecture for Highways England. It improves pedestrian and cycle routes over the heavily trafficked A63 highway and helps to reconnect the city centre to the fast-regenerating waterfront area. It has already become a distinctive new landmark for the city, a gateway to the historic Old Town area and a well-used civic space.

New photos show Danish studios Schmidt Hammer Lassen and Friis & Moltke’s Corten-clad prison overlooking a fjord in Greenland’s capital Nuuk. The facility, called Anstalten, is the first high-security prison in Greenland, which previously relocated all of those sentenced for serious crimes to Denmark. These relocated inmates will now be given the option to transfer back

The architectural firm Natureza Urbana is responsible for an extensive urban revitalization of a Bus Terminal located in the historic center of São Luís, in Maranhão, bringing as design precepts the intention of qualifying public spaces, improving the interconnection with the existing heritage, and boosting the activity of local micro-entrepreneurs. Manoela Machado and Pedro Lira, partners at Natureza Urbana, were the architects responsible for the project; also, the company Hproj Planejamento e Projetos worked in partnership with Natureza Urbana, with financing from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).

Striatus Bridge / Zaha Hadid Architects + Block Research Group

Striatus is an arched, unreinforced masonry footbridge composed of 3D-printed concrete blocks assembled without mortar. Exhibited at the Giardini della Marinaressa during the Venice Architecture Biennale until November 2021, the 16×12-metre footbridge is the first of its kind, combining traditional techniques of master builders with advanced computational design, engineering, and robotic manufacturing technologies.
