The house originally was commissioned in 1925 by a young engineer for his own family. The Tyrolese architect Siegfried Mazagg designed a masterpiece, one of a few only, as his life, unfortunately, was ended early by a car accident when he was only 30 years of age. The building has been granted a built heritage of the highest grade some ten years ago.
The project is conceived as an exterior and separate extension of an existing house, located on the courtyard area of the house, configured as an abstract prism that relates to its surroundings with an attitude of an object in the surrounding landscape. The spatial dimensions of the volume are based on the golden ratio and proportions. It is a small space of multiple uses that responds to the need to store, exhibit and produce paintings. The unique piece is conceived in wood from its genesis, solving the structure and the envelopes by taking advantage of both the possibilities of the prefabricated building system and its spatial qualities to achieve an interior of great warmth.
Architecture must have meaning. It must speak, tell stories and make us a question: a site, a program, a group of people and a story. It is a matter of specificity since architecture is the art of conjunction. Our parcel is drawn between the river and the city. The courthouse of Douai, undefined, seeks an identity. The challenge is to give sense and coherence to the project.
Mas de Lucia is a property dominated by the presence of an old magnificent country house surrounded by an extension of orange trees, where different events are held in the present. In this project, we were commissioned together with Xavier Salvador to create a wide space for the celebration of outdoor events but protected from rain and sun and at the same time to integrate 2 existing industrial buildings in the intervention. The Mas is a traditional country house, built facing the sea in the east, where the breeze comes from in summer and located by a pine forest to protect it from the sun.
The urban center of Córdoba is made up of dense blocks drilled by infinity of patios that give to this place the character of a space never fully known. When we go inside we find an amalgam of constructions from different eras where mass and emptiness alternate giving light, air and privacy to the inside. This territory of light and shadow is articulated throughout the collection of intermediate spaces that nourish the Mediterranean architectural heritage. Alleyways, open hallways, passages, corridors, courtyards, galleries, solariums and, finally, the fragmented landscape of the rooftops, make up a network of empty spaces that are interspersed in urban density providing continuity to the public space inside the block.
The existing building is an Edwardian semi-detached house located on a triangular plot along the river Quaggy. This unusual shape allowed space for development on the side while leaving three distinct garden spaces around the house, to the front, side, and rear. The idea was to build a two-story side timber extension which opens up a better connection to these garden spaces while creating an architectural contrast to the existing building. Given the proximity to the riverside, there are large mature trees all along the side and rear boundary, creating a green curtain around the gardens and giving access to longer views in between onto the borrowed landscape beyond.
Located in Quebec’s Eastern Townships, Knowlton Residence contrasts simple forms with vernacular materials to update an aging country farmhouse. In response to the client’s desire to enlarge and covert the existing country house into their primary residence, the gable roofed structure has been completely renovated with a new two storey extension built upon the foundations of a previous single storey addition. Going up instead of spreading out allowed for more space and better views without the need to excavate across the hilltop.
Shed roofs came up during the middle of the 19th century, especially at factory buildings. Rüsselsheim is one of the former industrial cities of Germany, well known for its Opel headquarter. The inspiration for the roof of the sports hall came from a factory building nearby. One of the advantages of Shed roofs is that natural incidence of light, coming from the north, will not produce any drop shadow, nor dazzling the people inside. Another positive effect of the north orientation of the building is that unnecessary heat indoors can be minimized; The direct solar radiation is relatively low.
The contest consisted of energetically rehabilitating and programmatically reorganizing the preschool building, in order to adapt it to the new pedagogical method that is being implanted in the center.
‘It’s all about the brick’ is how SPA future-proofed a garden apartment in a large Italianate semi-detached villa in North London. The clients wanted an enduring space to suit their growing family as their home forever. The answer was two-pronged: to remodel and retrofit the original and to expand into the mature garden, adding a true indoor-outdoor living. Central to remodeling was providing a flexible space for extended family visits and creating generous amounts of dedicated storage. Although the living space still occupies the same square meterage, resourceful design put away any potential clutter and all building services.
