Extension

When the old Speelhuis Theatre from structuralist architect Piet Blom (1977) burned down, the theatre found refuge in a mostly vacant Catholic church. In this period the church turned out to be a perfect backdrop for a whole range of activities and performances. It was then decided that the theatre should stay in the church permanently with some necessary extensions and improvements.

The geometry takes up the planimetric shape of the existing cemetery, reinterpreting the architectural elements that characterize the area in a contemporary key. The perimeter wall is the generating system of the composition.

The Concert Hall, Aarhus was originally designed by Kjær & Richter, and was inaugurated in 1982. With its new extension the Concert Hall has doubled in size and now encompasses a wide range of functions that turn the total complex into a unique concert and educational institution of international standard. The extension includes a Symphonic Hall with sublime acoustics and room for an audience of 1,200, a Rhythmic Music Hall, a Chamber Music Hall, and premises for the Royal Academy of Music, Aarhus, the Aarhus Symphony Orchestra, the Filuren children’s theatre ensemble and the Danish National Opera.

Manshausen 2.0 is an extension of the Manshausen Island Resort opened in June 2015. Manshausen Island is situated in the Steigen Archipelago off the coast of Northern Norway and is home to the world´s largest population of Sea Eagles. The Island´s position between majestic mountains and the Barents Sea is in itself the inspiration for the design.

The project for the pavilion started from the premise of providing open space and, at the same time, protected from the strong sun and rain that affect the region. Located on a pre-existing plateau, the building was designed regarding its relationship with the existing house and with the valley on which it lies, activating the intermediate space between the two buildings while offering a new view of the lush local geography. The spaces are organized by four structural modules of identical measures: 3×4.5m, each with 13.5m² of area.

Along the banks of the river Lek near Utrecht, a ‘ribbon’ of houses is situated outside of the winter dike only safeguarded by a lower summer dike. The first of these houses, built in 1910 and measuring 70 square meters, is a comfortable home for two. The owners fell in love with the atmosphere of the village and its beautiful floodplains, so they sought to adapt their home to their growing family.

This project extends a maisonette that had previously been converted from an early Victorian house. The new kitchen, dining and study spaces are informally defined by exposed oak posts and beams, allowing natural light to penetrate deep into the lower ground floor plan.
