The project consists in an intervention in an existing house with a small terrain within the city. The challenge was to implement a kitchen in the available space, which was between the dividing walls and where the natural light could only enter through one facade; the north one.
NEST is an interactive sculptural playscape designed and built by Tri-Lox, located on the rooftop terrace at Brooklyn Children’s Museum (BCM) in Crown Heights. Inspired by the unique nests made by the baya weaver bird, NESTis made from reclaimed NYC water tower wood fashioned into an organic form that creates a woven landscape made for play with a climbable exterior, circular hammock area, and permeable interior space for open and creative exploration. Tri-Lox explored the museum’s educational collection to inspire the design and came upon a series of well-preserved bird nests. One nest, in particular, made by the baya weaver bird, offers an intricately woven form with rooms, tunnels, and multiple entries.
The Cadagon Song School was commissioned to complete the composition of buildings within the historical Treasury/ Cathedral precinct, and provide facilities for the St.George’s Cathedral Choir. Located between St. George’s Cathedral, Burt Memorial Hall, Church House, and the Deanery, the 200sqm Song School was designed to not only visually balance the composition of unique existing buildings, but allow full access throughout the site. Consisting of a series of sculptural vaulted arches and a ‘tuning fork’ spire – a contemporary reference to the religious architectural language and defining lancet windows of the Cathedral – the scale and form of the vaults allows the eye to transition and understand the dialogue between old and new.
Situated in the centre of Ghent, an ancient manor house with a protected façade blends into the typical Flemish urban fabric. The outdoor space is limited to a small courtyard at the back of the house. The desire for a more generous garden on the one hand, and a separate place to read in silence on the other, led to the utilization of an area that had been untouched until now; the roof.
Designed for a family member returning to the UK after many years abroad, the building is conceived both as a fluidly connected addition whilst on occasion a self-contained and private guesthouse. The current house benefits from a substantial garden with mature planting and a delightful apple orchard. The new scheme is unapologetically contemporary, yet sensitive to the garden setting, ensuring that the new mass and bulk does not detract from the existing landscape.
A simple but effective stepped rear extension for our sociable, book-loving clients. Budget informed structure and materials to create a light filled and unique design that has a transformative effect on everyday family life. This rear addition to an Edwardian terrace house in South London was driven by the principles of simplicity and honesty – influenced by a modest budget but also a shared vision to create something unpretentious but materially and spatially rich.
This existing late-Victorian villa, a protected structure, has been remodelled and extended to take advantage of the magnificent views out over Dublin Bay and Ireland’s Eye.
The didactic block of the Federal University of Ceará campus in the municipality of Crateús is the second building of the set provided by the master plan of this academic unit, following the administration block that is also the gateway to the campus. This second building is divided into two clear and complementary parts: one whose program is focused on the teaching, research and extension activities of the University – educational module -, and another for living and complementary services for students, teachers, and servers – living module.
Normal House is straightforward. It extends to the side and rear of the house to provide a utility area, wc, and new kitchen. On the first floor the extension crosses the back wall of the existing house to create two bay window study areas to the tiny existing bedrooms. The internal ground floor walls are removed and replaced with two large sliding partitions. The project began around the same time as a trip to London to visit the social housing of Neave Brown, and that inspiring trip greatly influenced the materials and layout of the house.
Balmain Rock is an alterations & additions to an 1860’s built sandstone cottage in Sydney’s inner-west. More recent lean-to additions are demolished to reveal the original cottage, transformed into the main living room.
