This post-war end of terrace house has been completely refurbished and extended with a contemporary loft and a modern rear extension by its architect owner. The project delivers a high quality transformation inspired by the post-war utilitarian design of the original building.
Conceptually, the project is an insertion of two augmented lodges atop the existing house – one contains the parents’ bedroom & facilities, whilst the other is the children’s bedrooms.
Behind the sober building at Gävlegatan 18 in Stockholm, a mystical environment opens up. To the right stands a large building with many small windows and straight ahead is a bent one. Why all these little windows? And why this noble bend? All of it is now part of Nobis’s new hotel, Blique. The sober building facing the street, like the one on the courtyard with the many small square windows, was designed by Sigurd Lewerentz, the most ingenious individual of the twentieth century in Sweden. His radical obstinacy has now achieved mythical proportions, which only enhances the radiance of the distinctive courtyard building.
Canada’s first “bookless” library dedicated to Makerspaces, the Idea Exchange Old Post Office offers Cambridge residents free access to an array of spaces for learning and creativity, and a new, central hub for meeting and socializing. Anchored on the bank of the Grand River, the project reignites a landmark — a listed 1885 masonry post office that had fallen into serious disrepair — and adds a 9,000-square-foot transparent pavilion that wraps around the original building and stretches out over the water, revealing the conviviality within to passersby, enticing them in.
Architects Gruff have reinvented a mid-century London house into a colorful home for a young family linked throughout by recurring joinery and vibrant interior palette.
The apartment, located in the attic of an old residential building in Milan, was originally a small, compartmentalised, dark space. The project was designed in order to expand the interior space and change its perception by reshaping the existing geometry and increasing the amount of natural light. The layout of the apartment is based on a cruciform plan with four distinguished areas – kitchen, bathroom, living and working spaces, all gathered around the central element – the stainless steel column. The bedroom is located on the mezzanine floor, forming the unique geometrical block with the bathroom underneath.
An expansion to the family, the Harmon Guest House joins DBA’s h2hotel and Hotel Healdsburg to complete a trio of boutique eco-hotels adjacent to the square in Healdsburg. The new guest house sits on a narrow lot just to the north of h2hotel, bringing an increased capacity for sustainable accommodations and a needed parking resource for the popular wine-country town.
Deborah Berke Partners has transformed the central portion of the National Historic Landmark Richardson Olmsted Campus into the Hotel Henry, a boutique hotel that celebrates the history and architecture of the monumental structure designed by the Henry Hobson Richardson. The project brings new life to a long-abandoned architectural masterpiece, originally designed as the Buffalo Asylum for the Insane, adding to the revitalization of the city and reinforcing Buffalo as center of great American design.
Inspiration for this project comes from thinking about how this family live and enjoy life. Spaces are playful; conceived more like a favourite local café than a private house, reflecting this family’s desire to create a home that allows them to connect with friends, family and their local community.
Plusoffice architects add a floating floor to the town hall of Kontich, Belgium
Brussels based plusoffice architects renovated the existing town hall of Kontich in Belgium into a dynamic administrative house where various municipal services come together. The new council chamber – a floating floor on top of the existing building – became a transparent room that towers above the town square.
